Snoring or Sleep Apnea?

Are you a snorer? Or maybe it’s your partner who saw wood all night? Depending on what’s causing that nocturnal noise, there may be more at risk than a good night’s sleep.

Sometimes snoring is really a sign of sleep apnea, which means a patient actually stops breathing periodically while sleeping. Sleep apnea is a medical condition that decreases the body’s oxygen intake and can carry the risk of a shortened lifespan. It’s important to get the right diagnosis and not be fooled by over the counter cure that are not regulated for individual needs, as they might actually do more harm than good.

The good news is that a properly trained dentist can often help.

First, it’s important to determine the cause of the snoring. At Fuqua Advanced Dental, we offer special diagnostic equipment that can monitor a patient’s breathing and determine if a snoring problem is caused by sleep apnea. Once a diagnosis has been reached, there are several options, including a fully oxygen mask called a C-Pap that a patient wears overnight. This medical device has some advantages, but it’s cumbersome and difficult to transport, which makes it a poor choice for anyone who travels. Luckily, many patients can be helped in a much less dramatic and more convenient way, with a specially fitted oral appliance that is similar to an orthodontic retainer. Created by a dentist, this device helps maintain an open airway, thereby allowing oxygen to flow more freely all night long.

If you or someone you know is guilty of snoring, there may be more to it than meets the ear. Take the time to find out if there’s really an underlying health risk. A relatively simple solution could provide everyone with a better night’s sleep.

Custom Tooth Shading from Fuqua Advanced Dental

Have you ever looked at someone’s smile and thought their teeth looked a little fake? When it comes to cosmetic dentistry, all smiles are not created equal, and veneers and crowns are certainly not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Dentists have many different materials to choose from, and the shape of your face and color of your skin tone can play an important role in creating a beautiful and natural looking new smile.

As a prosthodontist, Dr. Steven Fuqua is an expert in implant and cosmetic dentistry, and he understands that teeth have depth and reflect light, so even small variations of color and shape can change the way a tooth looks on an individual patient. Dr. Fuqua studies many different types of dental materials, so that he can make the right choice for each individual’s needs. Using photographs and digital technology, he also determines the best color, contour and tooth shape for each patient, whether he’s replacing missing teeth, creating veneers, or designing a whole new smile.

If you’re considering cosmetic dentistry, it’s important to choose a dentist who understands different dental materials and isn’t afraid to spend the time it takes to find the choice that is right for you. A beautiful smile should look natural and provide a lifetime of functionality and comfort. In Dr. Fuqua’s case, the results speak (or smile) for themselves.

We’re Remodeling!

After 13 years, the Fuqua Advanced Dental offices are getting a facelift! In order to continue to provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere for patients, our Southlake Town Square offices are getting a fresh coat of paint, new carpeting and new lighting. We’ll also be easier to find, with a brand new sign going up on the outside of our building, highlighting our location in the heart of a bustling shopping center, above Ann Taylor.  And while we’re freshening things up, we’re also in the process of printing new brochures and other materials, to introduce new patients to our practice.

If you’re a patient of Fuqua Advanced Dental, we appreciate you very much and hope you’ll pass our name on to one of your friends. If you’re not a patient of Fuqua Advanced Dental yet, give Cherie a call at 817-410-8765, and schedule a consultation today. We want to show off our new look, and help you create a beautiful and healthy smile!

Dr. Fuqua Helps Southlake’s Littlest Patients Care for Their Smiles

If you have a young child, you may be wondering when you should start bringing him or her to our Southlake office for regular visits.

We typically recommend starting at three years old. Or, you may even want to bring your little one along on one of your own appointments, just to help him or her become accustomed to what a dentist’s office is like. This is can do a lot to help children feel more comfortable when it’s their turn in the dental chair.

Your Child’s First Visit

One of the purposes of bringing your little one in at such an early age is so we can see how your son or daughter’s teeth are developing. We can do this with just a simple tooth-by-tooth inspection, which also lets us check for signs of decay or cavities.

And because prosthodontics is about rebuilding smiles, prosthodontists are artists as well as scientists, putting smiles back together to look and feel natural.
